A combat simulator that does the maths exactly

Pick an attacker and a target and Hobby Armory works out what happens: the average result, the chance of wiping the unit and every outcome in between. Exact probabilities, not a few thousand random rolls, for 40K, Age of Sigmar and Kill Team.

  • 10th and 11th edition 40K
  • Age of Sigmar and Kill Team
  • Unit or whole army

Unit against unit

Choose the attacker and target from your own lists, your opponent's list, a unit in a live game or any datasheet in the game. Pick shooting or melee, switch the weapons that fire and set the modifiers: cover, re-rolls, plus one to hit and the rest.

The result leads with the number you want: how many models die on average, the chance of wiping the unit, wounds lost and points destroyed per 100 points spent. A chart shows every outcome, so you see the spread, not just the mean.

See how the dice go

Expand the result and the attack opens up as a funnel: attacks, hits, wounds, unsaved, damage, with the conversion at every step. Weapon by weapon it shows the roll needed, the chance and the average, and how much damage was lost to overkill.

A separate panel shows what each modifier you switched on actually added, largest first, because two buffs together are worth less than the sum of each alone.

Army against army

Load two whole lists and the simulator runs every attacker against every target. The heatmap shows which of your units are worth pointing at which of theirs, as share of the target destroyed or as points per 100. Tap a square to open it as a full unit result with the same modifiers.

Three games, three engines

The rules of each game change the shape of the maths, so each has its own engine rather than one formula with a different label.

  • Warhammer 40,000: 10th and 11th edition, each with its own rules for cover, saves and hit modifiers. Mixed save profiles, such as a character with a better invulnerable save leading a squad, are handled the way 11th edition allocates them. Lethal Hits, Sustained Hits, Devastating Wounds, Anti, Twin-linked, Torrent, Melta, Blast, Heavy, Lance, Precision and Feel No Pain are read from the profiles.
  • Age of Sigmar: damage carries over from model to model, ward rolls are made per point of damage including mortal damage, Rend and Crit abilities come from the warscroll, and champions add their attack based on how many models are still alive.
  • Kill Team: one operative's shoot or fight action against another. Defence dice block successes, cover and Piercing apply, and a fight is solved move by move for the best strikes and blocks on both sides.

Every number the rules give, from roll caps to cover, comes from the game's own published rules data rather than being typed into the app, and the engines are tested against hand calculated matchups. Anything the simulator cannot model yet is listed with the result, never quietly left out.

Part of the Battle Hub

The simulator lives in the Battle Hub beside the Briefing, game tracking and your match record. Results share as an image, and matchups can be saved and reopened with current points. It reads the lists you built in the army builder, so your own units are one tap away.

FAQ

Combat simulator questions

What is mathhammer?

Mathhammer is the hobby's name for working out what a unit is likely to do before you roll: how many hits, wounds and failed saves to expect, and how many models that removes. The Hobby Armory combat simulator does it for you.

Is the simulator exact, or does it roll random dice?

Exact. It carries every step as a probability distribution instead of rolling thousands of random games, so the same matchup always gives the same answer, and rare outcomes such as a wipe are not lost to sampling noise. The engine is checked against hand calculated matchups and a separate dice rolling simulator.

Which games does the simulator support?

Warhammer 40,000 10th and 11th edition, Age of Sigmar 4th edition and Kill Team 3rd edition. Each has its own engine, because the rules differ in ways that change the maths: AoS damage carries over between models and ward rolls are made per point of damage, and Kill Team defenders block successes rather than rolling saves per attack.

Which weapon abilities does it handle?

The common ones for each game, read from the weapon profiles: Lethal Hits, Sustained Hits, Devastating Wounds, Anti, Twin-linked, Torrent, Melta, Blast and more for 40K, Crit and Anti abilities, Charge and Companion for AoS, and Kill Team's weapon rules. Anything it does not model is listed under the result, never silently ignored.

Can I simulate my whole army against another list?

Yes. Army against army runs every unit of one list against every target of the other and shows the result as a heatmap, either as the share of the target destroyed or as points destroyed per 100 points spent.

Can I use it during a game?

Yes. In a live game, any unit on the table can open the simulator with its current models and wounds, against the units your opponent has left.

Can I save a matchup?

Yes. Saved matchups remember which units and modifiers you used, and opening one later recalculates with today's points and profiles and shows what changed.
